For whatever reason, I became obsessed with doing a garden/spring theme birthday party for my youngest who just turned one.

Kid’s Garden Birthday Party

The decorations and favors weren’t much to write about, but I had SO much fun trying new ideas with the food and goodies!

I had made the white rose cake before for a baby shower, so it wasn’t too hard. It’s actually super easy. You can follow the precise directions and get a good buttercream frosting recipe at iambaker, but it’s basically a ton of frosting applied in swirls and using a 1M cake decorating tip. Same for the flower cupcakes.

For the grass and flower cupcakes, use a knife to apply a thin layer of green frosting first, then use a tip like #233 to apply the grass, although my grass didn’t always look very grassy

The bumble bee cake pops were more difficult for me. I probably won’t be doing a whole lot of them in the future. 🙂 However, I enjoyed the challenge and am glad they turned out well. I included some tips on making these bee cake pops farther down this post.

For snacks, I put out some standard cheese and crackers, veggies and dip, and then some fun garden-themed snacks.

These ladybug snacks are from a sweet and simple idea I found on Yellow Bliss RoadSpread cream cheese on crackers. Cut a cherry tomato length-wise into fourths and use two pieces per ladybug. Then a piece of olive for the head. Make these right before the party or they get kind of goopy.

Ants on a log. ‘Nuff said.

These cute butterfly snack bags were a Pinterest find. Used the snack sized zip bags and filled with a little honeycomb cereal (yah they still make that) or goldfish crackers. Pin down the middle with a clothespin to make “wings”. Glue a piece of bent pipe cleaner onto the top for antennae. These were a big hit with the kids!

Bakerella made cake pops a big thing and I found the instructions for these cute bees on her site. First, crumble a sheet cake into a big bowl and mix with a 16-oz can (or homemade equivalent) of frosting.

Form ovals. I think I made my bees WAY too big. But there they are. Put on a cookie sheet lined with wax paper and freeze for a few hours.

Use a lollipop stick from the craft store (or in my case a cookie stick since my bees were huge) and dip the tip into melted candy coating. Push about 1/3 into each cake pop. Freeze several hours or overnight.

Before decorating your cake pops, make sure you have a space set up for them to dry. I bought a basket and circular floral foam from the dollar store. As I coated each pop, I stuck them into the foam and let them dry.

You can find the detailed instructions on Bakerella. But I just wanted to mention a few things I learned. First, a bag of candy coating will cover about half the cake pops in one batch. So buy two bags of the coating. You can find “candy melts” at most craft stores in a variety of colors.

After you dip the cake pop into the candy coating (I used a mug full of it), tap lightly to let a bunch fall off the end back into the cup and then slowly turn and tap, watching the coating to adjust for any lumps and drips. After a while, it will begin to harden (and lose it’s shine) and you can put in in your floral foam.

As for decorating, you can use white candy melts (pre-melted) for the wings. If you want to follow Bakerella’s instructions and make your bees look neat and tidy, make sure you can get a hold of black edible candy pens. There weren’t any in our craft stores and I waited too long to order online.

I ended up using black cake gel (available at most grocery stores) for the face. For the stripes, I used a small kid’s paintbrush to paint them on with chocolate glaze (also at grocery stores). Once finished, I arranged some silk flowers around the base to hide the foam and stuck the whole thing in the fridge overnight.

I admit, my little projects for this party were purely for my own entertainment and not really for my birthday girl or the guests. Cake decorating is so fun and becoming quite a hobby for me. I loved the challenge and am glad it’s over now. HAHA!

The more important thing was this precious little cuddle bug we celebrated.
