I am an analytical type of person who needs to collect and evaluate information before I’ll jump on board with something. I need to be convinced. Sometimes that’s good, sometimes not.

However, I’ve always had a healthy dose of skepticism when it comes to natural remedies and essential oils, and I’m sure I’m not alone. I love the idea of a natural way to improve our lives and boost our health, but I’m not about to spend my money on something that’s just smelly water. Right?

Skeptical About Essential Oils?

Several years ago, I decided to give this essential oils thing a chance. After all, reasonably intelligent and practical people that I trusted were telling me they worked. So, I straightened my thinking cap, tried not to smirk too much, and began gathering information and trying out essential oils for myself.

I learned a lot during my research and testing oils myself, and the results convinced me. Nowadays, I use essential oils often in my home.

In this post, I’m going to share what I learned on this journey:

  • The science behind essential oils
  • Sifting through the hype and fluff
  • Wrestling with ongoing debates like ingestion and purity
  • Studying where oils come from and who sells them
  • Learning how to use oils safely and effectively
  • And much more

It has been quite a journey already and I have learned so much. Thinking cap still intact, I’m no longer smirking (at least, not about this) and today my family enjoys the benefits of essential oils without all the hype. Doesn’t that sound lovely?

I was skeptical about essential oils but decided to give it a try, although I didn't want to sign up for an MLM. Check out our experience with Rocky Mountain Oils!

I am having a hard time with the whole essential oils thing. I know God created ways for us to be healthy and heal. The way that I hear about it is through people in my small group and things I read. All the talk about the good in their lives is from the oils and other mumbo jumbo. It’s like essential oils are elevated and no mention of God.

Hi Renae! Weirdly, I didn’t see this comment until just now. Not sure how that happened. Sorry I missed it!

Essential oils are just one of many tools that can be used for the health and wellness of our families – just like good sanitary practices, herbs and teas (which I’m just learning about), and eating healthy food. God is the only true Healer and Counselor. He should be the first and foremost in all things, including our mental, spiritual, and emotional health.

I agree things can get weird in some circles with essential oils. Since I really have found them effective for many things, I just choose to use them for what they’re worth and toss out the mumbo jumbo. I do think it’s good to be aware of the ways that they can be elevated beyond their real value as well as some of the unbiblical metaphysical aspects that can creep into the conversations. I should write a post about it sometime soon.

My point is – it’s good to be alert and careful in this as with many other things.

      Thanks for your comment!

Is this the same course over at Intoxicated on Life? Do you write for both sites?

    1. Tauna

I wrote the original skeptic’s guide to essential oils for Intoxicated on Life but not the ecourse. The ecourse here is totally different (I haven’t even taken theirs). The series are different too but both are based on my experiences and opinions, so they have some similarities. 🙂

I have a son with Autism and I have heard that essential oils can help with some of the things he goes through. I just signed up for your ecourse hoping it will teach me some of the things on how to use it. Thank you for this informative things in the blog post above.
