redirected – Thanksgiving Craft: Pumpkin Turkeys

Looking for a craft idea to use up some un-carved pumpkins after Halloween? Look no further! You can make these turkeys a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving or just a few days so they are still good for cooking.

I found these instructions for a kids’ craft to turn the pumpkins into turkeys. It turned out really well and the kids had a blast.

Look at the instructions for more details, but basically you print the patterns on colored paper and cut them out. The kids can decorate them if they want. Then glue them onto popsicle sticks.

When the glue has dried, make spots on your pumpkin for them. Just price the pumpkin with a knife where you want the pieces to go. That’s right, stab the pumpkin. It’s very theraputic.

Depending on the ages of your kids, they can push the sticks into the pumpkin or just show you where they want them to go. Stick some pompoms onto the spots that were dented from the glue if you want. Then slap some pilgrim hats on and you have turkeys! We like to make one for each member of the family.
Some things to note.
  • It takes longer than you’d think. Just have fun with it and maybe do one at a time. if you have very young kids.
  • Putting your turkeys outside will make for sad, wilted paper pieces. Better to make them indoor turkeys!
  • It’s a valuable teaching activity: gluing, colors, talking about turkeys and Thanksgiving as we work, doing a project in phases. Plus, I’m apparently teaching my children that turkeys wore pilgrim hats back in the day. Oh well.

Enjoy your pumpkin turkeys!
