Being Active As A Busy Mom

Being a mom is hard work. Often, we are up before the dawn, getting meals ready, kids ready for school, the house clean. This is all after I spend time with the Lord. Unfortunately though, it often leaves out getting in time to take care of the temple that God has given me – my body.

How do we, as busy moms, stay active, without losing focus on our relationship with God and being present with our families?

Rise Early.

The most important thing we can do to be active as a busy mom is to rise early. I have an amazing husband who is very hands on in our morning routine. There have been many times where I have LONGED to stay in the bed, just for those extra 10 or 15 minutes.

However, I have learned that if I stay in the bed –  something in my day has to go. Even for 15 minutes. The thing that always goes is my personal fitness. We have to keep our priorities in order – and often, that means rising earlier than we like.

Stay on Track.

It is real easy to let the day slip away from us. Real easy. Even doing good things. We need to be sure we keep our priorities in order. That might mean your workout is an evening run – and that is fine- just don’t let things get in the way. Try to carve that time out. You will have more energy – and be able to be more present – if you do.

Surrender it to God.

We have to commit our health to the Lord. He has given us our bodies to use for HIS glory and HIS service here on earth. This is the most important thing we can do for our health. It must be a conviction.

I learned that last one the hard way. I tired – many times- to do my health on my own. Each new year, I would set out, focused that this year I would lose the weight. This year I would run the half marathon. This year I would achieve my fitness goal. This year.

The sad part was, it was never committed to the Lord. I have learned that the things I don’t commit to Him – I let go of. First.

The reason is, if I promise the Lord, I don’t want to go back on it.

So, this year I have committed my health to the Lord. There isn’t a number goal in mind. There isn’t a trophy that I want. I just want to honor God in my health. That means being active. So, I found a few things that I love that are helping me get this way.

  1. Peak313 Fitness – This is an awesome blog that is written by an amazing Christian women- Clare. I had the privilege to meet her a few years ago, and she is the real deal. Her desire isn’t to see people be skinny- but to be healthy. She provides challenges, recipes, and spiritual food for thought. I highly suggest you check her out.
  2. My Fitness Pal App This app is great. You can record your food and your exercise on it. You can connect it to your Facebook and have friends follow you – and hold you accountable. I have learned that accountability is the BIGGEST thing outside of my commitment to God that keeps me motivated.
  3. Fitbit This is one of my new favorites. You wear this watch -and it tracks how many steps you take each day. It syncs with your computer- and helps you keep your fitness goals. I know if I need to walk a few more steps each day. I currently have a little clip on – but I am saving up for the watch I linked to! It is definitely the one to get!
  4. My Commitment – I wrote out Romans 12:1-2 on my computer- and I signed my name to it. This is my reason for getting moving each day. I am committing to hitting play in my life and being present for years to come. You can get a download of that commitment here!
