Mathseeds Review: Homeschool-Friendly Math Program for Ages 3–9

Over the years, I’ve learned that finding the right math program can be a real trial-and-error process—especially with younger kids. As a homeschool mom of six, I’ve tested a lot of resources to meet the different needs and learning styles in our home. One program we recently tried and really enjoyed is Mathseeds by Reading Eggs.

We used Mathseeds with my 8-year-old son to give him a fun and engaging way to move forward in his math skills. He already had experience with Reading Eggs and loved the fun and motivating lessons it provider, so I had a feeling Mathseeds would be a hit, too. I was right! Mathseeds gave him just enough structure while still feeling like play.

Read on to find out what Mathseeds is all about, how we used it in our homeschool, and tips to make the most of it.

What Is Mathseeds?

Mathseeds is an online, interactive math program designed for kids ages 3–9. It’s from the same team behind Reading Eggs, which we’ve also used for strengthening early phonics and reading skills. Mathseeds uses colorful animation, cheerful characters, and fun challenges to teach foundational math skills.

Each lesson includes a teaching component, practice activities, and short review games. My son loves the rewards they give for each lesson (acorns and pets). They keep him motivated to continue with the program, which is a win!

How Mathseeds Works

Mathseeds is very user-friendly for both the students and the parents. Its easy to just jump right in and get started. 

Placement Test 

Mathseeds is a self-paced, mastery-based program that also incorporates review. It starts with a short placement test to determine where your child should begin (which I highly recommend using). You can also change their level manually later if needed, which is helpful. Once the placement test is done, your kid can start the lessons!

Lesson Structure

Your child will follow through a series of structured lessons that each focus on a specific math skill or concept. The program will gauge their mastery of a topic before allowing them to move on. 

Each lesson typically includes:

• Direct instruction guided with enjoyable animations 
• Interactive activities that reinforce the lesson content
• Short quizzes or “end-of-lesson” checks to assess understanding
• A fun reward system with acorns that are used to buy items as well as games and pets to collect

The lessons are bite-sized and engaging, which is pretty important for my kiddo and his short attention span! Most take about 15 minutes or less to complete. We tend to keep a close eye on screen time, too, so I appreciate that the lessons don’t take long.

Drills and Assessments

In addition to the placement test and end-of-lesson quizzes, Mathseeds provides two more features that help kids practice and retain their skills:

• Mental Minute: This is a speed-and-accuracy drill feature focused on building math fluency. It offers short, timed exercises on things like number facts and mental math.
• Driving Tests: Kids are asked questions targeted to their level. Answering them correctly moves their car forward until they cross the finish line. After they successfully complete the track, they are rewarded with a short and fun race car game! (My son loved this.)

Parent Dashboard

The parent dashboard is helpful and is a quick way to get a look at your child’s progress, the lessons completed, their scores, and the time they’ve spent on the program. I often used it to spot areas we could review more together or to praise progress I might’ve otherwise missed. You can also opt to get student reports via email so you don’t forget to check. 

Printable Worksheets and Workbooks

While Mathseeds is primarily online, there are optional printable worksheets available for most lessons. These are great if you want a hand-written piece that helps reinforce learning–this can be essential for some students! You can also go to their Book Shop and buy print workbooks to go along with lessons or extend the learning when you’ve completed the program. 

3 Ways to Use Mathseeds in Your Homeschool

Mathseeds is designed for ages 3-9. Generally speaking, I like to start math in 1st grade rather than in younger years. However, I have also had some younger kids who have asked to “do school” with the olders. Whether you start early or later, here are a few great ways to use Mathseeds in your homeschool.

1 – A Summer Catch-Up Tool

We first tried Mathseeds during the summer months. I wanted something light and consistent to keep my son’s math skills from sliding. It ended up being the perfect fit to use it just 15–20 minutes a few times a week. (We homeschool year-round, but like a lighter schedule during the summer. Mathseeds is perfect for this.)

2 – A Supplement During the School Year

Mathseeds also works well as a supplement to our main math curriculum. If we’re doing a hands-on or workbook-based program, I’ll have him use Mathseeds a few days a week for extra reinforcement. It gives him practice in a fresh format and helps cement the concepts he’s learning.

3 – A Standalone Curriculum for Early Elementary

Mathseeds can also totally stand on its own as a full curriculum for early elementary, especially in Pre-K through 1st grade. It covers foundational concepts thoroughly and in a way that builds real understanding. Mathseeds makes it easier by providing full 36-week homeschool lesson plans in the Bonus section that tell you what lessons to cover each week and what concepts will be learned; what books in the library to use, etc.  🙌

Tips for Getting the Most Out of Mathseeds

Like I said before, Mathseeds is very easy-to-use so you don’t need to do a lot to get started. However, there are a few tricks we’ve learned along the way to get the most out of it: 

• Build it into your routine. Having a consistent time of day for Mathseeds helps build the habit and keeps kids progressing. We tend to tackle math right after Bible time in the morning.
• Sit with them if needed. Some kids can do Mathseeds on their own without an issue. Others need a parent there to make sure they aren’t goofing off and playing with the buttons/sounds instead of answering the problems correctly. Ask me how I know. 😉 For my kiddo, sitting with him or at least listening in as I go about other tasks is important. 
• Use the print options. Whether you bring in some of the free worksheets provided or buy the printed workbook, it’s a helpful way to solidify their learning. 
• Pair it with real-life math. Reinforce concepts from the lessons with practical activities—cooking, measuring, or playing store. Connecting with what they’ve been learning this way makes it so much more memorable!
• Check the dashboard. The parent dashboard gives a helpful overview of progress and areas that might need review. I always forget about it, so I’d also definitely turn on the email notification option. 

My “Bottom Line” on Mathseeds

If you’re looking for a flexible, low-prep, and effective early math program, I definitely recommend giving Mathseeds a try.

For our family, it’s been a great tool, especially for that little boy who learns best when lessons are short and interactive. It covers all the learning styles–visual, auditory, and kinesthetic– and is easy to adapt to your unique homeschool needs.
