Review of the Child Training Bible
First, let me tell you what the Child Training Bible it is, how we tweaked it to fit our family, and how we’ve used it in our home each day.

Our Child Training Bible – An office supply nerd’s dream come true |
We were attracted to the Child Training Bible primarily for this reason: We want our children to know that the path of life is in God’s true Word. We want them to see us opening up our Bibles with our hands and searching the pages for wisdom and instruction.
Not only for devotions and story time… but in the thick of life together.
Not only for them… but for ourselves as well.
God’s Word is powerful and can bring about powerful change in the hearts of our children. This is even more evident as we saturate our days with scripture, making it as regular and essential as eating and breathing, and then watch as the Holy Spirit does His holy work.
The Child Training Bible is a tool to help us parents in these goals. Ours sits on our shelf and gets used nearly every day. Common sins that we struggle with are identified and color coded. Key scriptures addressing those sins are marked with colored flags for quick and easy reference.
The Child Training Bible packet includes:
- Instructions
- Topic key
- Three laminated tab cards.
You will also need:
- A Bible – I asked my husband what version he’d prefer to use for training and devotion purposes and bought a couple of cheap hardback copies from Christianbook.com
- Highlighters and Post-It Flags/Tabs – I went to a local office supply store with the CTB key so I could get the exact same colors for highlighters and flags.
It took me quite a bit of time to set up my Child Training Bible. You will have to use the tab cards to find the scriptures for each topic, find them in the Bible, mark them with your highlighter, and add the colored tab. But it’s well worth it.
Here’s how we have used the Child Training Bible in our home:
- For me: Often I just quickly flip through for a verse that will help ME through a struggle or give me wisdom on how to handle a recurring behavior issue.
- For correction: When a situation arises, I sit down with my child and ask probing questions about what happened. I help them identify what tempted them and how they responded sinfully, and then we go to the CTB to see what God says about it. Then we brainstorm or even act out more godly responses. The CTB cards offer suggestions and questions for this purpose.
- For instruction: During our lesson time, I have used the CTB to start discussions with the kids about particular problem areas (most recently, anger, selfishness and pride). We tie in Bible stories, learn some of the scriptures or recall ones we’ve already memorized, and talk about sinful vs. godly responses and the consequences that come with them.
- For encouragement: Many times the scriptures we’ve read offer encouragement to the child. I build them up with the promises of God that He will give them wisdom and discernment to make the right choices. That everybody struggles with sin. That we all need Jesus and the Spirit to help us live godly lives.
- For prayer: I give the child a chance to pray and confess, repent, and ask forgiveness. Then I pray with them, acknowledging that they are forgiven, thanking Jesus for loving and forgiving them, asking for God to empower them to make good choices, speaking a blessing over the child, etc.
I outlined or underlined the text instead of fully highlighting so it wouldn’t show up too much on the other side. |
Flexibility
- Adding scripture addresses to the tabs: I wrote the scripture address on each tab to help me flip to favorites quicker and perhaps help me start memorizing frequently-used ones. That extended set up time quite a bit, but I’m glad I did it.
- Adding scriptures: When I come across a scripture that seems like a really good one for the CTB, I just write it on the appropriate tab card and mark it in the Bible.
- Adding a topic: There was just enough room to add a topic. I ended up adding most of the scriptures used on our Doorposts’ Brother Offended checklist, since we’ve been using that heavily in our home to teach biblical conflict resolution. I put a little “BO” on the corner of the tab for my own reference.
- Putting the key on the front: The key was too big for the size of my Bible, so I trimmed down the edges of the key and then used double-sided tape to slap it on the front. Doing that has the added benefit of making the CTB stand out among the chaos, causing us to use it much more often.
There’s our light blue Brother Offended tab section. “BO” = Brother Offended. How appropriate! 😉 |
We have truly been blessed by the Child Training Bible in our home. I am excited to pass that blessing onto one of you, courtesy of the generous folks at Child Training Bible!

I would love to have this. I am finally trying to get my life back on track. Through a long addictions during the vital years of my kids lives I missed a lot of good time to teach them about God. A major regret that I constantly carry. Because of this I feel like we are at step one. This would be a wonderful tool to use and help give them a major part that I neglected. Also if I am not the one chosen could you please allow me to purchase?
You can order from Child Training Bible website….if you don’t win. You can google it and it comes right up.
Great suggestions, especially about the highlighter ink showing thru the Bible pages. I wish they made the Bible dry highlighter in more than just four colors.

Love that you added family specific tabs. I think I may have to tweak ours a bit now to correspond with things our little pre-teen daughter is going through
I learned a lot even just making the bible. I realized that the topics are going to be just as helpful for me as they will be for my children
I love that you added the tab for conflict resolution! With two little girls constantly fighting over… everything… that will come in handy! What are some of your favorite verses for that “tab?”
I really want to use this with my family. My boys are still really young, but I have read Dobson’s Dare to Discipline as a resource.
Right now we are involved in AWANA and spend a lot of time learning Scripture. I have wanted to ad the CTB for a long time to our resources, but have not done it yet. I hope I win!

Awanas is invaluable in our home for scripture memorization and retention- looking forward to using the CTB in our home as well. I really enjoyed reading about how you have expanded it’s use in your home!!
I really like Doorposts resources.
I purchased a CTB materials and put the Bible together for a 1st birthday gift for a friend. It was work & I wished I had done 2 at the same time so that I had one as well. I had a hard time finding the right size Bible, most were just slightly smaller. I love, love, love what you’ve done to put the key on the outside of the Bible. I will have to do that with mine. Would love to win this. Also, I think I will use colored pencils (acid free) instead of the highlighters to mark the verses so that there is no bleeding through tothe other side.
We use the Bible and The Jesus Storybook Bible. Also, I want to get the We Choose Virtues kit.
We use the Hands on Bible, and are working through Apologia’s “Who is God” book. I would love to win this resource as well!!
I don’t necessarily have a great biblical training tool which is why I would LOVE to win this and try it out with my kids! -Jen
We have not been using anything. I have been thinking it over and over again how can I find a scripture quickly when I need to address an issue with a child without spending time in the concordance. This is an amazing idea!
I’d love to win! Such a wonderful idea!
I LOVE THIS! I don’t think you can have enough copies of this! This is a product everyone can use! I am wanting to give all of my nieces/nephews/cousins one for Christmas!
This looks wonderful!! This would be a wonderful blessing to use in our home for training our four kiddos 🙂 (Not sure if I was suppose to post my email address or not)
The CTB is such a blessing! I keep sharing it with all my friends and they are as happy with it as I am.
This would be an awesome addition to our family’s resources. I try to utilize Doorposts’ For Instruction in Righteousness – but often it sits on the shelf forgotten. This would be a program we would actually USE!
I will love to win this for my sister! TY!
