Here’s what we’ve decided on for this year. It feels good to get all the pieces down “on paper” like this for my own reference! Gonna print this puppy up and slap it in my homeschool binder. 🙂
Keep in mind, this is the scope for the WHOLE year, so there’s plenty of time even though it seems like a lot. Still, we are going to work on the Kindergarten stuff in the order listed so that we can lighten the load if needed and keep the focus on what is most important and most interesting to the kids.
Also want to mention that I’m really intrigued by some other resources that I will continue looking into for next (and maybe some of this) year. Most of them are free. I’ll be posting soon on the many interesting resources I’ve come across in the past few months while planning. We just had enough around the house and with FIAR to take care of this year! Although I ended up buying a few things at the homeschool convention anyway. 😉
Our 2012-13 Homeschool Curriculum
- FIAR Bible Supplement and Betty Lukens flannelgraph set (bought ours last year on ebay)
- Truth and Grace catechism/memory books 1-3
- We’ve selected devotions to use during breakfast and lunch, will continue daily “Memory Lane” scripture review, and have regular family worship/devotion in the evening. That last one has been really hard for us to implement, but we’re making progress.
Tot School (Reagan – 1.5 yo)
- Tagging along with siblings
- Tots art program we’re testing on our 1.5 year old for a friend who is starting a business
- Lots of story time
Preschool (Sami – 2.5 yo)
- Tagging along with older brother
- Misc. preschool/coloring books we already have, such as Developing the Early Learner thinking skills workbooks 1-4
- Moncure’s alphabet books (used for ABC Jesus Loves Me curriculum and we love them! Found the set for $6 at Goodwill. Score!)
- Lots of story time
Kindergarten (Jaron – 4.5 yo)
- Before Five in a Row (BFIAR) – we’ve already done all the units for the books we have on hand. We may do a few more during the year.
- Five in a Row (FIAR) – literature unit studies (includes social studies, language, art, applied math, and science)
- Reading lists from resources like Ambleside Online and Sonlight
- Audio books from the library and resources like librivox.com
- Lots of story time
- FIAR lessons
- Projects from Preschool Art (we LOVE this library book!)
Reading:
- Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons (we’ve been working on this for a while)
- Reading practice using misc. easy readers and all the Now I’m Reading sets that were handed down to us
- All About Spelling or similar program for strengthening phonics and spelling skills
- Writing practice from 100 EZ Lessons book
- Misc. workbooks we already have
- A Reason for Handwriting K
- Scripture copywork I come up with
- Writing his pen pal, Jack
- Piano? Thinking of going through some free online piano lessons with Jaron.
- Fun ideas from Music for Homeschoolers (library book)
- FIAR lessons
- Exploring nature walks with books like Pocketful of Pinecones and web sites
- Exploring creation science resources as a family
- FIAR lessons
- Mathematics Their Way – a manipulatives-based curriculum handed down to us, along with most of the materials for the lessons
- Horizons K workbooks 1 and 2 and other misc. workbooks we have on hand
- Developing the Early Learner thinking skills workbooks 1-4
- May start basic geography (FIAR does some), including resources like Beginning Geography
- Maybe some American history lessons
- Our homeschool co-op will start meeting again once a week in the fall, doing things like P.E., service projects, arts and crafts, and field trips.
We’ve already started FIAR but are keeping it light for now so we can play outside as much as possible in this good weather! In a few weeks we’ll have a 5 year old, 3 year old, and 4 month old joining us for daycare, so they’ll be tagging along in many of these lessons too.
