History of the Olympics

The Olympics are a special event where athletes from all over the world come together to compete in various sports. The Olympics began over 2,700 years ago in a place called Greece! They were created to honor the Greek gods, especially Zeus, who the Greeks considered the king of the gods. The ancient Olympics had events like running, wrestling, and chariot racing. Only men could compete back then, however, and they had to be free citizens of Greece.

The Olympics we know today started again in 1896, thanks to a man named Pierre de Coubertin from France. He thought it would be great to bring countries together to compete in sports. The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, to honor the ancient games. Now, both men and women from all over the world can compete. Athletes come from almost every country! There are many more sports included in the games now as well, such as swimming, gymnastics, soccer, and even skateboarding!

  • Olympic Rings: The Olympic symbol has five rings of different colors (blue, yellow, black, green, and red). They represent the five continents of the world coming together.
  • Olympic Torch: The Olympics start with the lighting of the Olympic flame, which is carried from Greece to the host city in a special relay.
  • Mascots: Each Olympic Games has a unique mascot, which is a fun character that represents the host city and country.
